What Is ProPilot Assist 2.0 Post

Nissan’s always been on a quest to make the perfect vehicle, delivering innovations and advancements with every model year. Now, Nissan has taken on the challenge to create self-driving vehicles with its ProPilot Assist 2.0. Automakers have been working hard to offer the public self-driving cars, and ProPilot Assist 2.0 is a step in that direction, offering “ramp-to-ramp” autonomous driving technology that’s set to revolutionize the auto industry. Read on to learn more.

The Next Generation of ProPilot Assist

As its name suggests, ProPilot Assist 2.0 is the latest and greatest generation of Nissan’s ProPilot Assist suite of advanced driving assistance systems, or ADAS. This generation is set to give drivers of Nissan vehicles the ability to experience comfortable, hassle-free hands-off driving when traveling on certain sections of roadway.

While drivers need to stay attentive to the task at hand, the system will use visual or audio signals to direct the driver to take an action. At that time, the driver must be ready to take manual control of the wheel when conditions require it.

What Does ProPilot Assist 2.0 Do?

Nissan’s ProPilot Assist 2.0 is a ramp-to-ramp navigational-assisted highway driving system, which means autonomous driving can only be engaged on mapped, limited access highways that are designated for its use. ProPilot Assist 2.0 helps drivers as they travel expressways, freeways, and interstate highways in the following situations:

  • Lane diversions (where highways divide)
  • Lane exiting
  • Passing

Ramp-to-ramp technology is helpful for drivers, providing hands-off driving at a specified speed while driving in a given lane. It also informs the driver when she can pass slower-moving vehicles in favorable conditions.

Lane changes are also initiated when the driver puts both hands on the wheel, then engages the turn signal to indicate the desired lane. ProPilot Assist 2.0 then determines if it’s safe to make the lane change, then completes it when possible.

How Does ProPilot Assist 2.0 Work?

There are tons of technology that makes ProPilot Assist 2.0 work as intended. Using satellite positioning technology, the system can pinpoint the vehicle’s second-by-second position on mapped roadways. It also uses high-definition map data of the highway and surroundings to mark the vehicle’s progress down to the centimeter.

Finally, the system also uses pictures of the position of other cars and lane markers to make decisions. Vehicles equipped with ProPilot Assist 2.0 are outfitted with multiple cameras and radar and sonar sensors to determine the positioning of vehicles and lane markers on the road, crunching all this incoming data in real time to steer, accelerate, and brake. While not a fully comprehensive autonomous driving system, ProPilot Assist 2.0 brings us much closer to complete hands-off driving—an exciting development that’s set to revolutionize the auto industry.

Nissan Remains the Leader in Automotive Innovation

Nissan’s ProPilot Assist 2.0 is just one of the automaker’s innovative technologies that make driving easier, safer, and more comfortable than ever before. The Ariya EV, set to release this year, will be the first model on the market to offer ProPilot Assist 2.0. Want to learn more about this exciting technology, or experience it for yourself?
