2022 Nissan Frontier vs. 2022 Ford Ranger

If you're in the market for a new pickup truck this year, there are quite a few contenders to choose from, and you might find yourself torn between the 2022 Nissan Frontier and the 2022 Ford Ranger. Which is the better truck, and which offers you the best features?

Our team at Maus Nissan New Port Richey takes an inside look into what each of these trucks has to offer to help you decide!

Truck Overview

Though these trucks are in the same class, there are many differences between the Frontier and the Ranger.

The Nissan Frontier offers different upgradeable trims including the Frontier S Crew Cab, the SV King Cab, the Frontier Pro-X with 2WD, and the Frontier Pro-4X with 4WD and enhanced off-road capabilities.

The Ford Ranger is available in the base XL trim, as well as the XLT and Lariat trim.

Performance

The redesigned 2022 Nissan Frontier comes with a 3.9-liter V6 engine that offers 310 horsepower with 281 lb.-ft, matched with a nine-speed automatic transmission. The Frontier also offers 18 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway, as well as a 21-gallon gas tank.

The 2022 Ford Ranger comes with a 2.3-liter turbo-four engine with 270 horsepower and 310-lb-ft of torque. The Ranger offers 18 miles per tank, 21 mpg in the city, and 26 on the highway.

Exterior Styling

The Nissan Frontier has plenty of new-age rugged touches but draws some inspiration from an old hardbody pickup design.  Both 2WD and 4WD Pro-X versions of the Frontier come with LED headlights and daytime running lights, fog lights, and upgraded body accents. The Frontier Crew Cab is equipped with a 5-foot bed and the extended cab comes with a 6-foot bed.

The Ford Ranger is also a rugged pickup truck and comes with optional LED units in the front and rear, as well as cargo bed lighting and puddle lamps.

Off-Road Features

Off-road enthusiasts will prefer the Pro-4X Frontier trim which adds rugged off-road features such as an electronic locking differential, Bilstein off-road shock absorbers, and underbody skid plates. It also comes equipped with off-road modes to choose from while out on a trail. The truck's front and rear suspension provide superior handling on and off the road due to hydraulic cab mounts, larger stabilizer bars, and urethane jounce bumpers.

The Frontier's maximum towing capacity is 6,720 pounds and comes with standard Hill Descent Control on its 4WD trims.

The Ranger's Tremor package has a lifted suspension, redesigned front knuckles, specially-tuned shocks, and Fox dampers. The Ranger offers four unique drive modes, skid plates, and a rear locking differential. The base trim comes equipped with a 3,500-pound towing capacity.

Technology

The Frontier's interior is influenced by outdoor adventure gear and upgraded amenities. It comes standard with a 9-inch color touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity.

Optional features on the Frontier include:

       Wi-Fi hotspot

        two 110-volt outlets

Fender Premium Audio system equipped with nine speakers.

The Ranger comes with an optional 8-inch touchscreen as well as connectivity with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Buyers can also opt for Wi-Fi connectivity and a B&O Play premium audio system.

Safety

The 2022 Nissan Frontier comes with plenty of standard safety features including:

       Intelligent Cruise Control

       Traffic Sign Recognition

       Intelligent Driver Alertness

Optional systems include the Safety Shield 360 that offers Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Warning, and Rear-Cross Traffic Alert.

The Ford Ranger comes standard with Automatic Emergency Braking while the following safety features are optional:

       Lane Keep Assist

       Lane Departure Warning

       Pedestrian Detection

       Adaptive Cruise Control

Both trucks can be optionally equipped with puddle lamp lighting in the cargo bed for easier access at night.

Bottom Line

While the Ford Ranger might offer a little bit more in miles per gallon on the road, the Nissan Frontier has a larger gas tank, more towing capacity, and better performance with the Pro-4X trim-an off-roaders dream! And don't forget about Nissan's zero-gravity seating.
